China, India and Pakistan each use their own unique system for grading rug quality by knot count. Handmade rugs from any country (except China) are often graded by "knots per square inch."
ONLY CHINESE RUGS USE THE "LINE COUNT" SYSTEM SHOWN BELOW
Remember that Indian, Chinese, and Persian designed Pakistan rugs show each knot only once and the Pakistan Bokhara rug, show each knot twice. Try these systems on real sugs. Not only are they easy to learn, but you'll feel ike a rug "expert."
China
All Chinese rugs are graded by "line count." Common line counts include 70 line, 80 line and 90 line. These numbers only tell us how many knots are in a foot of the carpet's width. A 100 line rug has 100 knots in one linear foot across the width of the rug. No other country uses this system.

Two Number are used such as: 4/25, 5/40. etc.
first number> 4/25 <second number
First number is the amount of knots in
9/10 of an inch of the rugs width.
Second number is the amound of knots in
4 1/2 of the rug's length. |
Pakistan
Rugs are graded by using two numbers:
first number> 8/14 <second number
First number is the knots in one inch of width.
Second number is the knots in one inch of length.
